Workshop at ECTP 2002 on "Development of a standard for Contact Transient Methods"

9 am Tuesday 3 September

Following workshop discussions held during the ECTP Conference at Würzburg in 1999 and the 26th International Thermal Conductivity Conference/13th International Thermal Expansion Symposium at Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 2001, a draft standard has been prepared and issued for comments on the NPL website (http://www.npl.co.uk/npl/cbtm/thermal/ctm/). All ECTP 2002 delegates and other interested parties are invited to attend this follow-up meeting to discuss the draft standard.

Draft agenda

  1. Introduction from Ron Tye and David Salmon of the Thermal Metrology Group, NPL
  2. Presentations from contributors on the individual techniques covered by the draft standard
  3. Open discussion of the draft standard
  4. Agree actions on the following future work:
    1. Inter-laboratory comparison requirements
    2. Selection of reference materials
    3. Responsibility for the standard: which standards body?
  5. Any other items

Discussion forum at ECTP 2002 on "Coordination of thermophysics in Europe"

2 pm Tuesday 3 September

This meeting is an opportunity to inform you about activities in thermal metrology clubs or societies across Europe and to describe a new development, EVITherM, a European Virtual Institute for Thermal Metrology.

With the experience of the national clubs behind us we are well aware that the many issues and concerns in thermophysics are common to all and so improving interaction across Europe is a natural step to take, especially as collaboration is becoming more important and communication across borders is now much easier with growing uptake of the worldwide web.

Existing national clubs are important mechanisms that help facilitate collaboration and information exchange and EVITherM, a European Virtual Institute for Thermal Metrology, once fully operational will bring about a step change in this process since it will act as a focal point for thermal activities and issues and help improve coordination and communication between suppliers and users of thermal information and research outputs.

The meeting could last 3-4 hours with a summary of European Club or Society activities first, followed after a tea break by a presentation of EVITherM and general discussion.

Draft agenda

  1. Temperature and Thermophysical Properties Awareness Club (T2PAC, UK) - Melanie Williams (NPL)
  2. German Working Group in Thermal Physics of GEFTA - Harro Bauer (PTB); and the Association of German Engineers (VDI) - Guenther Neuer (IKE)
  3. AIPT, the Italian Thermophysics Society - Francesco Righini (IMGC)
  4. Thermophysics Working Group of the Slovak Physical Society - Libor Vozar (SAS)
    TEA BREAK
  5. Introducing EVITherM, a European Virtual Institute for Thermal Metrology - John Redgrove (NPL) & other EVITherM colleagues
  6. Open discussion on coordination of thermophysics in Europe
